A silver gilt catch piece from a Post Medieval hook and eye type dress fastener, dating from the 16th century.

A silver-gilt catch piece from an eye type dress fastener. A piece of silver wire has been formed into one large loop (now broken) and two smaller ones for attachment to the textile. On the front at the centre is an applied disc with three bosses and filigree ornament. Between the bosses is an applied pellet. Three similar pellets are positioned in the angles between the domes. The upper surface has been gilded.

Similar items can be found on the PAS database: HAMP-BD26A1 (2011 T476), BH-0174E0 (2006 T584), and NMS-53F8D3 (2013 T542). Also see Read Class B type 2 page 159 example 599.

Notes:

As the dress fitting contains at least 10% silver and is at least 300 years old, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
