SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: HESH-1734E5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper alloy fitting with a seal matrix inscribed in the upper surface. Due to the smallness and incomplete nature of the find it is difficult to ascertain what it originally fitted to. The remains of an iron shank / pin is present imbedded on one edge. The shape of the matrix is irregular being a waisted pedestal with an irregular octangular (rectangular with corners cut away) die. This die is decorated with a beaded border and a poorly preserved central design, possibly a pair of initials. The style of the matrix would suggest a modern date - c. 1750 - 1900. The artefact has a mid green well preserved surface patina. A direct parallel has not been found - although the size and shape of the matrix is similar to that seen on fobs from the Georgian periods.

The artefact measures: 13.6mm high, 12.7mm wide and 11.4mm thick; it weighs 5.0 grams
