A copper-alloy lamp suspender of Medieval date.
The artefact comprises a slightly domed, irregular plate, from which spring the remains of five perforated lugs. The hanger extends vertically upwards from the top of this plate and is of oval section, with a collar beneath its worn apex loop.
Height: 14.6mm; length: 20.1mm; width: 16.3mm. weight: 3.03g.
Similar artefacts have been found in excavations in London and are discussed by Egan (1998: 130 - 133). Their interpretation as lamp hangers is based on evidence provided by contemporary illustrations, along with the fact that some of those excavated retained portions of chains. The lamps themselves have been found in ceramic and glass forms in London, the dates of their production spanning most of the Medieval period, although the ceramic examples generally seem to be earlier (ibid. 126 - 130).
