A cast lead alloy button probably dating from the later post medieval period or early modern period (1550-1750). The button is circular in plan and domed (D shaped). The head is solid and cast in one piece. The front face is decorated with an intricate design comprising a central domed pellet around which six lentoid pellets are arranged in a star burst / flower head pattern. Between the lentoid petals are large raised domed pellets. The external edge, which is eroded, is decorated with alternating lentoid and domed shaped pellets. The ground between the raised elements is further decorated with low relief patterns of interlace and crosshatching. The rear of the button has a single integrally cast projection / shank (diameter: 3.3mm) which broken flush with the surface of the reverse. The button is a mid grey colour with an abraded patina and slightly laminated / corroded surface. A direct parallel has not been found, although broadly similar designs are illustrated in Read's Metal Button; he dates these to the post medieval period c. 1550-1750 AD.
The button measures 28.4mm length, 31.2m,m width, is 5.5mm thick, and weighs 14.04 grams.
