BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-A75616

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy plate brooch of Roman date. It is lozenge shaped in form, with extremely corroded front face that shows signs of originally having additional decorative elements attached or soldered to it, but these are now missing due to post-depositional damage and corrosion. At the top of the back face is an integral double pin lug, with corresponding semi-circular catchplate at the base of the back face. The pin is missing due to old breaks. The entire object measures 27.07mm in length, 26.66mm in width, 1.79mm in thickness and 3.34g in weight.

This is an incomplete plate brooch of Roman date. It finds similar parallels in examples published by Hattatt (1989: figs. 207-208) but its precise form is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. It is of probable 2nd century AD date, if not later.
