Cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1620-1680). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly rectangular in plan with a central bar. From the short edge of the frame two triangular shaped wedges extend. The pin is complete and formed from a single sub-rectangular tapering length of copper alloy sheet which is attached to the central bar by the end being folded to form an irregular 'wrap around' loop. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. At the centre of the buckle, above the axis bar are two small abraded knops. The reverse of the buckle is plain and undecorated. The buckle is a mid grey green colour with an abraded and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. Movement in the ploughsoil has also resulted in the buckle becoming asymmetrical, and slightly bowed in profile. Similar examples to this buckle can be seen in Ross Whitehead's book 'Buckles 1250 - 1800', pages 82-83: specifically cat no: 512-514 Whitehead suggests that these buckles date from the post medieval period (1620-1680).
The buckle measures 37.5mm long, 19.7mm wide, is 2.7mm thick and weighs 3.92 grams.
