STRAP END

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete copper alloy strap end of Early Medieval date. The strap end is of Thomas' Class E and is tongue shaped with a split terminal at the flat end. The split terminal is worn and broken though the remains of two rivet holes can be seen on both plates. The upper surface of the strap end is decorated with a tongue shaped panel denoted by an incised border within which is a geometric design featuring three "X" shapes joined by a central vertical line. The lower "X" is smaller than the others to fit in the tapering panel and resembles a crude zoomorphic terminal. Five ring and dot features are present above the flat end of the panel from which the strap end splits. The reverse is flat and undecorated.

The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The strap end is 48.5mm long, 20mm wide, 4.7mm thick and weighs 12.1g.

Late Anglo Saxon and Viking strap ends have been classified into several types by Thomas (2003, 2004)

Class: Thomas Class E, no Type
Sub class: Aspatria
