A fragment of a cast copper alloy artefact of probable later medieval date (AD 1200-1500); due to the fragmentary nature of the piece it is difficult to positively identify it. The fragment is a small section of a multi-faceted (possibly hexagonal or octagonal) tube. The internal profile of the piece is circular. Every side is broken and an original edge is not present; all the breaks are old and abraded. On one broken edge are the remains of a circular hole set within a raised thickened lug / square collar. The hole through it is at least 8mm in diameter, The three faceted panels are all decorated with an incised design comprisig vertical stems flanked with detailed leaf and flower motiffs depicted in compass work. The fragmnet is a mid-green colour with a well formed but abraded surface patina, where abrasion has removed this surface a mid brown purple coloured corrosion product is present. A direct parallel has not been found, however, it bears some similarities to other medieval padlocks for example from Raydon, Suffolk (SF-BCACE3). There is an outside possibility that this fragment may possibly be part of a tap of similar date, although the detailed decoration would not be common on such an item.
The fragment measures 34.6mm long and 16.3mm wide, is it 2.1mm thick and weighs 8.2 grams.
