Roman to Medieval (mid 1st to 15th centuries) unidentified artefact: The copper alloy is composed of three integral elements which form a sub-L in profile. The upper portion of the vertical arm is an elongated conical which terminates with a blunt point. This is slightly obliquely angled compared to the lower portion of the arm. The lower portion of the arm is an elongated rectangular block, which on the reverse is flush with the upper conical. On the opposite face the upper conical is slightly off-set from the lower portion. Integral to the lower narrow edge of the artefact, forming a horizontal arm there is a sub-circular platform/foot. The surface of the artefact has an abraded surface with traces of a well-developed mid green patina. It measures 43.8mm long, 17.29mm wide across the foot and 19.28mm thick from the reverse of the vertical arm and the tip of the foot. It weighs 10g.
The function of the artefact is not known, but may be a type of latch, element of a key or some such functional, rather than decorative artefact. The date, Roman to Medieval (mid 1st to 15th centuries) is based on the surface condition and simplistic shape to the elements.
