Lead and iron shot. Cast ball for a light musket, carbine or heavy pistol with a ferrous metal spike of diameter [now] 2mm passing centrally through it and projecting c.6mm. Possibly with a light belt or circumferential flattened area from firing; lightly patinated. This is probably part of an iron-stemmed dumb-bell shot, a modified form of ammunition for a smooth bore muzzle loading weapon. These are more common on the continent, though examples have been recorded from the English Civil War battlefield at Cheriton, and elsewhere. Those reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme include more examples for lighter weapons such as pistols or carbines, which may have required modified ammunition to add to their 'stopping power' and compensate for their lighter bores. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700.
