Copper alloy with gilding strap end. Cast sub-rectangular openwork plate with a trefoil end; a small domed rivet of head diameter 2.4mm passes through the central lobe of the terminal, and there are three further probable fixing points at the outer corners of the plate and at the base of its terminal. An almost three dimensional lion facing walking left is integrally cast along with the plate, with tail curling above its back and a generous mane. Tiny patches of gilding are trapped in the relief of the mane. The openwork plate may have been intended to reveal a brightly coloured strap. Lions in various heraldic poses were a favoured feature of 13th-century strap fittings reported from London and elsewhere. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1300.

Length: 25.1mm, Height: 16.5mm, Thickness: 6.5mm, Weight: 5.65gms.
