Incomplete Middle or Late Saxon copper alloy cross-shaped brooch. The curving sides of each arm are followed by a groove. In the centre of the brooch, at the convergence of these grooves, is a low lozengiform boss with a concave underside. An additional short groove is present on the central foil at each terminal of cross-arm. On the reverse of one arm is a short catchplate, the end of the opposed arm, which would have carried a pin-lug, is missing. 31mm x (extant width) 23mm. 1mm thick.
Brooches of this general type, like the related "cogwheel" brooches, are thought to be 9th-century in date. Other Norfolk examples are known from Attleborough (HER 36681), Felthorpe (HER 35253), Horningtoft (HER 50014), Norton Subcourse (HER 36227), Quidenham (HER 24050), Seething (HER 40302), Shotesham (HER 21165 and 39888), Stratton Strawless (HER 24031), Swanton Morley (HER 12999, NMS-FB3333), Wicklewood (HER 24504) and Wreningham (HER 56176). An example has been found in Friesland (Boss 2007-8, 791, fig. 4i, 2.11.8).
