A copper alloy Early Medieval coin; a styca of Aethelred II, probably first reign (AD 840 - 844). The moneyer is Leofdegn and the coin is from Pirie's group Ci or Cii. The cross on the obverse face is Pirie's type 1 and the reverse symbol a pellet surrounded by a ring of dots. This is not listed as an option in Pirie's table or Group C central motifs, and is most similar to Group A, type 5b, but without the outer line ring. The letter G in Leofdegn impinges on the central motif.
