A incomplete possible tip from a 'copper' type soldering iron of unknown date but likely dating from the Medieval to modern period (up to c.1900). The object is missing a fragment from its top. It is four sided, broadly rectangular from the front and back, and lozengiform from the sides. It measures 52.30mm in height, 17.65mm wide and 15.35mm thick, and weighs 54.62g. The front and rear faces taper towards each other to meet at the top. There is a 14 x 11mm perforation through the front and back near the top of the weight. The front and rear faces also taper more sharply at the bottom.
Notes:
Typically soldering irons up to 1900 were made from iron which would have a copper tip fitted to the end. Earlier examples of objects described as soldering lamps or osldering 'boats', such as those from Coppergate York and Tattenshall Thorpe Grave (73B) are all markedly different with channelled recess to pour solder along (Leahy 2011; 149, Riley 2014. 60-61), Early high medieval examples from illustration also look different so if this is the tip of a soldering iron/lamp it seems likely that a later medieval to modern date is most likely.
A similar example to this was recorded as PUBLIC-E958C9.
