Medieval brooch in the form of an openwork trefoil with a flat-sectioned frame with three large integral collets (one at each angle of the trefoil) and 12 evenly distributed small collets, four of which are now missing, inserted into holes in the frame. All but one of the surviving collets is filled with a white, chalky substance, and five of the small collets have the remains of originally octofoil repoussé roves with raised edges around the base.
The frame is slightly expanded internally next to one of the large collets for a hole for the wire pin.
Measuring 28 x 28mm. Width of frame 5mm. Thickness (including frame and collet) 6mm.
For a rectangular openwork brooch with larger but similar roves (in this case cast sexfoils) see Egan and Pritchard (2002, 257,fig.165, no.1343). See also an annular brooch with collets and separaley inserted decorative pins (NLM-15D743) and an elaboprate but incomplete annular brooch with multiple collets (YORYM-082126).
