A cast silver shoe or knee buckle. The frame of the buckle is rectangular and has rounded corners. On the front face, along the short sides the frame is bi facial and this continues around each corner into the long sides. The long sides are wider at the centre with a hole drilled into the inner side to accommodate a separate spindle. The long sides are decorated with flowers or foliage finishing just before each corner. Attached to the spindle is a chape and pin. The chape has straight sides and extends beyond one of the short sides of the buckle frame to a rounded end where a stud is attached. The stud is designed with a quatrefoil flower in the centre of a raised rim. A rectangular section has been cut from the chape at the spindle end to accommodate the pin and on the body of the chape there is a possible makers mark of a clear 'M' or 'W' followed by another letter. A triangular pin is attached to the centre of the spindle, and the pin rests on the top side of the frame. The underside of the frame is flat and it is possible to see corrosion iron corrosion on the frame.

This form of buckle has been dated to between c1660-1720 and Whitehead provides many examples (Whitehead, p.98-100).

Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal, it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
