Two uniface lead tokens: The tokens are sub-circular in plan and one has the intial 'H' with a two pellets in the field. The reverse is undecorated. The surface is an mid grey colourand and measures 18.85mm diameter max, and weighs 5.5g. The second token has the intials 'GH' . The reverse is undecorated. The surface is an mid cream colourand and measures 22.82mm diameter max, and weighs 9.3g.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850 AD), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be Medieval, the remainder which carry stylised designs remain difficult to date but the majority are probably Post Medieval in date c.1500-1850. These can be classified as a Powell Type 2.
