SHOT

Unique ID: PUBLIC-711CA6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Two cast lead alloy shot / balls for use in a musket / carbine of post medieval date (AD1600-1800). Both shots are spherical with a relatively well formed surface patina. They are relatively round and smooth - suggesting that they have not been fired. The colour of both balls is a pale grey with areas of white powdery corrosion.

Similar shot have been dated to the later post medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. The context of this find / assemblage would indicate a date in the English civil war. Musket balls are discussed in Courtney's "Small Arms Accessories of the Mid-Seventeenth Century" (1988) and on page 202 of "Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition" by Geoff Egan (2005).

The musket balls measure:

1. Diameter: 13.7mm, weight 15.0 grams.

2. Diameter: 13.4mm, weight: 13.6 grams

Notes:

Both of the shot were found in the same hole

Class: Musket/Carbine
