A complete and misshapen post-Medieval cast copper-alloy hooked tag (c. 1500-c. 1600). Read Class E, Type 5.

This tag is formed of three integral elements, the attachment loop, body and hook. There is a bend at the junction of the body and hook. It is moulded at the front and flat at the rear.

The attachment loop is sub-rectangular and has a pellet at each side adjacent to the body. About 30% of the loop contains casting debris. The body consists of an openwork moulded trefoil knot, known as a Hungerford knot and is decorated with hatching that is barely visible. At the front, between the body and hook, there is an elongated knop. The tapering hook is 'D'-shaped in cross-section, flat at the rear, and its tip almost makes contact with the rear of the elongated knop.

This tag has a mid-green patina overall.

Height (if straightened): 38.1mm; width: 17.5mm; thickness: 1.9mm. Weight: 2.67g.

Hooked tags with a similar design have been published (Read 2008: 110, refs: 436, 437 and 438).
