Roman hollow-cast, pear-shaped, round-sectioned copper alloy steelyard weight filled with lead within which the lower part of an iron suspension loop is embedded. There is a round opening in the casing at the top and base. Decoration consists of circumferential grooves, a pair near the base, three just below the widest part and three more near the top. Height 41mm. Diameter 44.5mm. Weight 437g. Similar to examples from Barnham Broom, Norfolk (HER 28370, NMS-4B1C86), Reymerston, Norfolk (HER 56947, NMS-503D97) and Fressingfield, Suffolk (NMS-D60A95). The weight (437g) is quite close to 16 Roman ounces (unciae) or 1⅓ pounds (libra) = 432g, though, of course, there is no need for a steelyard weight to conform to any one weight system. c.43 - c.409.
