A largely complete hook-piece from a copper-alloy post-medieval book-clasp. It is sub-rectangular in shape, with a flared attachment end. The book clasp is made from two sheets; the upper sheet being the bigger while the reverse sheet is splayed towards the rear teminal where the clasp could be secured to the leather. This end of the clasp has five rivets holes, four of which are intact. Another rivet hole with intact rivet is located near the opposing hook end. Traces of narrow incised linear decoration can be seen on the top plate but it is faint.
Book-clasps bearing similar decorative motifs (punched ring and dot, the incised 'pheons') can be found illustrated in Crummy (1998, 68; e.g. ref. 2993). These examples are given a 17th-century date however they are generally dated to between AD 1550-1650.
