Gilt copper alloy 'dandy' button, circular in plan and flat in profile, but missing its attachment loop on the back. The button face has been incised and then gilded with a central cross of nine pellets within a four-petalled flower. From each arched angle, between the petals, emanates an arm of a four-armed cross of bifid, V-shaped leaf motifs. The gilding that remains in the fields between the arms of the cross retains the chequered pattern of incised rows of pellets on a gird, creating a patchwork effect, perhaps trying to emulate woven textiles.
Bailey (2004) illustrates a similar dandy button with pellets and petals forming a central fleur on page 60, Fig.9.160, and a button with a bifid leaf foliage border and another with a chequered pattern on page 72, Figs.9.251 & 9.253, which are all dated from the 18th century.
