BUTTON

Unique ID: CORN-0B2F77

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Gilt copper alloy 'dandy' button, circular in plan and flat in profile, but missing its attachment loop on the back. The button face has been incised and then gilded with a central cross of nine pellets within a four-petalled flower. From each arched angle, between the petals, emanates an arm of a four-armed cross of bifid, V-shaped leaf motifs. The gilding that remains in the fields between the arms of the cross retains the chequered pattern of incised rows of pellets on a gird, creating a patchwork effect, perhaps trying to emulate woven textiles.

Bailey (2004) illustrates a similar dandy button with pellets and petals forming a central fleur on page 60, Fig.9.160, and a button with a bifid leaf foliage border and another with a chequered pattern on page 72, Figs.9.251 & 9.253, which are all dated from the 18th century.
