Unique ID: NMS-73A5D2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Middle Saxon cast copper alloy Ansate brooch, sub-triangular terminals with engraved lines bordering both sides and a central ring-and-dot. D-sectioned bow miscast with the underside of the bow infilled and unfettled. Reverse with twin perforated lugs (one broken) with iron corrosion, pin missing, flat-sectioned catch-plate, most of curled-over end missing. Length 42mm. Width 14mm. Weighs 6.30g. See Hübener Gruppe 4 (1972, Abb. 8, nos.1-7) and Thörle's Gruppe III A. c.560/70-c.630/40.

This brooch appears to belong to Thörle's Group III, which would correspond with Weetch's type III. If so, it is only the second to be found in England, the first being from Pocklington (Weetch 2013, no. 1154). The Pocklington brooch differs in its proportions and decoration.
