COIN

Unique ID: LANCUM-5CE838

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A silver denarius of Carausius dating to the period AD 286 to 293 (Reece period 14). (VIRT?) CARAVSI AVG reverse type depicting lion advancing left with thunderbolt in jaws. Mintmark: -//RSR; commonly attributed to London, but to be studied further. RIC V, pt 2 - The reverse of this coin has been double-struck. There is one other similar coin, with inscription VIRT CARAVSI AVG (hence suggesting this coin is VIRT rather than VIRTVS), in Sam Moorhead's corpus for RIC.

Notes:

Sam Moorhead notes that this coin type is known with the legends (VIRT?) AVG and VIRTVS SAEC. This coin is the first recorded example with the (VIRT) CARAVSI AVG reverse legend.
