A complete copper alloy zoomorphic knife end cap, of Post Medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1600).
The cap takes the form of a stylised animal head, probably a dog.. It is sub-oval in crosssection. The terminal consists of an elongated head with an up-turned snout. The mouth is indicated by incised grooves and the eyes are represented by small circular punch marks. Ears are marked on either side as small circular depressions. The top of the head is grooved. There is a diagonal groove on both faces that extend from the back of the head at the top to the front under the chin. At the base a longitudinal groove is filled with the remnants of an iron tang.
It measures 11.8 mm in length, 12.6 mm wide and 8.3 mm thick. It weighs 5.0 g.
The end cap is a mid brown colour, with an even surface patina.
Other knife end-caps in the form of a zoomorphic animal headare recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example, see finds: WILT-24BAF2; WAW-588A25; YORYM-5B94B2; .LON-F6A171 and BERK-F6D3E5.
