A cast copper alloy coin weight dating to the late Medieval period, circa 1464-1470. The weight is circular in plan and rectangular in section with rounded corners. One side of the weight shows a king standing on a ship with a sword and shield. There may originally have been a rose depicted in the bow of the ship but the weight is too worn to be certain. This type of weight is usually uni-face, however it is uncertain whether the patina on the reverse has worn in an unusual pattern or if this side of the coin was decorated. The weight has patches of matte mid green and light grey patina. The surfaces of the weight are worn with heavy abrasion around the edges. The use of round weights with representations of a ship were used in the 15th century and 16th centuries (Withers P. & B.R. Lions, Ships and Angels Galata Print. Powys p. 18). This weight is possibly for a ryal issued between 1464-1470 which would have originally weighed 120grains. The object only weighs 96grains but would have lost weight owing to abrasion.
