Lead weight. Cast standing weight with facetted sides producing an octagonal section or 'pyramidal' form (Biggs and Withers2000, 30-33). The apex of the weight is pinched to produce a narrower lug with a drilled hole of diameter 3mm to permit suspension, and the base is dimpled. The mass could suggest this object to represent an underweight half mark (80 pennyweight under the Tower system) or one underweight quarter of a pound, possibly either the fifteen ounce medieval merchant pound or the more familiar sixteen ounce averdepois version. Class parallels from London come from later medieval contexts (Egan 1998, page 322), and provision for suspended use, as with a steelyard - reintroduced in late medieval times - may confirm this dating. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1450.

Height: 47.8mm, Width: 23.4mm, Thickness: 23.3mm, Weight: 111.87gms.
