A cast copper-alloy buckle of gaping-mouth beast type and possible 12th-century date. The object is sub-spherical and hollow, decorated in the form of an animal head with pointed ears like a cat's emerging from the top of the head. the face has almond-shaped eyes in relief to either side of a nose; the nose has an upturned, piggish appearance. The mouth is open, giving the face a gaping or gasping appearance.
The back and base of the fitting has an opening, L-shaped in cross-section, with an integrally cast bar running across this opening at the corner or meeting point of the base and back.
This type of buckle was recognised by Rogerson and Ashley (2011) and divided into two types depending on how the strap was attached. This one is a Type 2, and is similar to one from Grimston, Norfolk (NMS-4A6DC4). They are thought on art-historical grounds to date to the 12th century.
