An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type, West Midlands), Mackreth 2011, 4.a-4.b, 4c, Plate 46, Roman dating (AD 80-120.
Approximately 50% of the brooch is present and consists of the head, bow and part of the wings. The pin and foot are missing, presumably lost in antiquity.
The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular in profile, narrowing to a point at the start of the foot. The bow is D shaped in cross section. The wings are incomplete and are rectangular, and probably D shaped in cross section.
The reverse of the head of the brooch (between the two wings) has a sub-oval shaped partially covered recess, which extends across the entire back of the brooch, from one wing to the other. This recess would have held the spring/chord for the pin. Part of the iron axis pin is still present within the covered part of the recess.
The brooch measures 27.0 mm in length, 17.6 mm wide, and 12.0 mm thick. It weighs 6.4 g.
The brooch is a mid green to brown colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of the original surface detail.
