An incomplete cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon small long brooch dating to the 6th century AD. The brooch is missing its head plate and the curved bow; a sub-lozenge shaped body narrows into a short neck that is delineated by a thick rasied band set horizontally across the brroch; beneath this band in the expanded crescentic foot. The brooch is worn and is suffering from corrosion and it is not possible to tell what the decorative style was, however traces of tinning or silvering are extant. On the reverse part of the catchplate remains. A similar example but with a more rounded foot was recovered from the cemetery at Wally Corner in Berinsfield (Oxon) and is illustrated in MacGregor & Bolick (1993:126) no 15.5. Another similarly styled example from Sussex is illustrated in West et al. 1998 p248 fig 130.4.
Small long brooches were in use during the early Anglo-Saxon period (AD c.410-720) and are generally dated from the 5th to the 6th centuries AD.
