Incomplete curving terminal of a post-medieval mount, a furniture fitting, the terminal of which is cast in the form of a bird's head with ring and dots for eyes, the lower part of the body with a spiral lines and a fragment of the possible tail looped around and underneath to join the underside of the body. See a much more complete example from East Kirby, Lincs, into the other end of which an iron shank is set (NCL-775D54) and a less intact piece from Chedzoy, Somerset (SOM-6B52C5). Another one, again complete and with an inserted iron shank, was recovered from Postwick with Witton, Norfolk (HER 30401, NMS-FA74E3). Three very similar fragments are known from Norfolk, Hales (HER 21515), Horning (HER 8446) and Postwick with Witton (HER 34967, NMS-558573). The first was described as a "Heron with dewlap on neck and feather tuft at back of head". The third was identified as possibly Roman. Surviving length 60mm. Thickness 4mm, at head 7.5mm. 17th - 18th century.
