Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Dolphin or Polden Hill type and dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch is incomplete, missing the lower bow, the majority of the wings and the spring. The brooch employed a spring mechanism secured by either a rearward claw or a Polden Hill arrangement, since the wing terminals no longer survive it is now difficult to determine which type of arrangement was used. The head of the bow is comparatively large (12.5x14.5mm) and was decorated with a central raised V-shaped crest, possibly covered in punched marks. The bow has a D-shaped section and emerges from the head in a straight projection, as apposed to the more common curved 'dolphin' profile, and possibly lends weight to the brooch being of Polden Hill type.
