Head fragment of a Roman copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative,Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.j Plate 48. Dating to the late 1st-early 2nd century AD. The brooch is represented by the head with one of the wings only. The brooch employed a Polden Hill claw type arrangement to secure the spring. The wing is plain and has an expanded terminal. The bow carried comparatively heavy cast ornament consisting of opposing C scrolls at either side of the head, with ribs continuing down the bow from the lower end of the scroll. At the centre of the bow is a low groove. The bow has a D-shaped section and appears to have been tinned or silvered.
