BROOCH

Unique ID: HESH-4F5143

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands) of Roman date (80-120 AD). One of the wings is lost the other is semi-cylindrical with eroded wing / end caps. The axis bar, spring and pin are lost; the spring would have attached by an external loop which is attached to a rearward facing hook located at the centre of the wings on the upper edge. A large depression is present at the mid point of the reverse - between the wings - this is filled with a mid grey coloured porous cement / adhesive. The profile of the brooch is curved / comma shaped. The bow head of the brooch is hump-like, and slightly angular. The bow is semi-circular (D-Shaped) in cross section. It tapers to a blunted point. The catch plate on the reverse face of the bow is lost; it expands from a ridge below the head. It is difficult to know if the brooch was decorated due to its eroded state. The brooch is poorly preserved with a mid-green coloured eroded surface patina. Similar brooches can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Guide to Ancient brooches pp 300 fig; 159.

The brooch measures 48.9mm length, 16.6mm width across the wings and 7.0mm across the bow; it is 3.1mm thick at the same point. The brooch weighs 6.7 grams.
