An incomplete copper alloy heraldic harness pendant of Medieval dating (14th Century AD).
Approximately 75% of the pendant is present, missing one corner and most of the edges. It is of the 'heater' shield shape (a flat top, with sides that curve steeply to a point). The upper edge has an integrally cast suspension loop, which is sub oval in plan and set at right angles (ninety degrees) to the pendant. It is angled forwards, with an circular pierced loop (internal diameter 3.2 mm). No enamel remains on the harness pendant, and it is not possible to determine the original design.
It measures 38.5 mm in length, 26.3 mm wide and 5.67 mm thick. It weighs 3.0 grams.
The harness pendant is a mid brown colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of most of the original surface and detail. The pendant displays a diagonal bend, which is probably the result of post depositional damage.
Heraldic harness pendants are a frequent find and there are plenty of examples on the PAS database, all are of 14th Century dating.
