Report: A Roman gold finger-ring with gem-set box bezel.
The broad strap-like hoop, now partly crushed, is constructed from a central plain strip flanked by a pair of beaded or segmented wires. The ends of the central strip are fastened to the wall of the box bezel while those of the flanking beaded wires are expanded into openwork heart-shaped shoulders, their coiled ends also fastened to the bezel wall. Heavy wear on the outer face of the hoop extends onto the shoulders.
The large oval bezel has flared walls soldered to a flat base plate and a twisted wire (also rather worn) soldered to the rim to secure the glass intaglio.
The intaglio has a dark blue substrate, bevelled sides and a pale blue flat surface into which is engraved the image of a seated draped figure, possibly Roma, with an object supported in the outstretched hand.
