A complete lead spindle whorl, dating from the Medieval to Post Medieval periods The spindle whorl is circular with a central circular perforation running through it. Both faces appear to be undecorated.
The metal is a mid beige colour and is very worn. It measures is 29.8mm in diameter, 11.8mm thick and weighs 48.45g.
Lead spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty. Decorated examples are thought to date to the medieval to post-medieval periods while undecorated examples cannot be securely dated without supporting contextual evidence.
