Copper alloy possible badge fragment. Cast relief motif possibly representing flame issuing from a round grenade or shell. A prong on the back assisted attachment. This motif was a badge of artillery units, Fusilier Regiments and Grenadier companies in various post-medieval armies. This suggestion was kindly offered by the finder. Given the height of the flames, only a fusilier bearskin could accommodate the extent of the whole badge if the identification offered is sustained. Alternatively, this may be a decorative harness mount of post-medieval date. However, Peter Hart kindly comments: 'General outline of the "flames" do not match any British Fur Cap Grenade, Glengarry Grenade or cap badge'. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1800-1950.
