Unique ID: WMID-917AC5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete copper alloy trade weight of Post Medieval dating (18th Century AD).

The weight is circular in plan. The obverse has a raised ring around the edge as a border. Four stamped marks are present. These consist of a 'Crowned G' for George I (AD 1714 to AD 1727); A sword of St Paul (representing London); a Ewer representing the London Founder's Company and a Capital A indicating that it on the Averdepois weight system. The reverse is plain and undecorated.

The weight is a mid green colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

It measures 32.0 mm in diameter, and is 4.9 mm thick. It weighs 23.5 grams (0.83 oz).

Originally it was probably a one ounce weight, and due to abrasion, has lost some mass. Weights of this style are normally 18th Century in dating.
