A complete lead seal matrix of Medieval date. It is flat, circular in shape with an integrally cast rectangular pierced lug on the back face.
On the front face is a central die depicting four leaves. This is surrounded by a legend that reads *S'ROBI:DEDEN(reverse barred)E, a personal seal for an individual named Robert Dedene (or de Dene). A Robert Den was taxed 10d in Nettlestead in 1327. The back face is undecorated and has been damaged and bent backwards.
This seal matrix measures 20.26mm in diameter, 2.07mm in thickness, 6.19g in weight.
This is a personal seal of Medieval date, bearing the name of the individual who used it. Personal seals of this form first appear in the later 12th century with the appearance of a line separating the legend and central motif apparent in the 13th century (Harvey and McGuinness, 1996: pp. 79). However, it is interesting to note that this seal is of a later date.
