A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date, circa 3500 - 2100 BC. The implement is a side scraper formed from a secondary flake which is ovate in plan with a triangular section. The ventral surface is smooth with ripples of percussion radiating from the bulb of percussion and striking platform. The dorsal surface is irregular having had two long flakes removed and displays negative scars and corresponding arises. Shallow retouch is present along one long edge.
The flint is a dark brownish-grey colour with lighter inclusions and a small area of cortex is retained. The implement is 37.6mm long, 19.2mm wide, 6.9mm thick and weighs 5.1g.
Scrapers are fairly ubiquitous throughout prehistory and are generally less chronologically distinctive than other artefact types though rounded and disc scrapers are usually attributed to the Neolithic period. Scrapers had many different functions in the Neolithic as they were very useful tools and were employed, for example, for skinning animals, removing the fatty deposit from hinds and much more.
