A post-Medieval gold finger ring with slightly distorted hoop and missing inset. The hoop is of 'D-shaped' section, widening slightly at the shoulders, which are decorated with a pattern of niello-filled 'herringbone' grooves. A longitudinal ridge extends centrally down each shoulder, its distal end replaced by a cruciform indentation. The inverted-pyramidal bezel is gripped on each corner by a realistically moulded claw, the tip of each claw resting on the inward-sloping top of the setting. A series of bands, defined by niello-filled grooves, adorns each claw, with further such grooves covering the remainder of the bezel's underside.
Depth (bezel to back of hoop): 22mm; width: 19.5mm. Weight: 2.54g
A close parallel for this ring is Treasure case 2002 T46, found near Ipswich, Suffolk. In the report for the Ipswich ring, Judy Rudoe states 'This is a characteristic type of the (late 16th - early 17th century) period' (TAR 2001: 75).
