HARNESS FITTING

Unique ID: LEIC-93DFD0

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Published Find published

Iron Age/Romano-British copper alloy fitting, 58mm long, 37mm wide and 7mm thick. The object consists of two sub-circles joined together which have a slight point at each side, making them leaf shaped. Within this are two deep circular grooves one beside the other. Within the grooves are solid domes about 5mm high. The reverse has the broken off base of two shafts, which were probably part of a staple shaped fixing bar. It is likely to date from the late iron age or early Roman period and is a type known as petal boss mount, which are usually found in Northern Britain and may be linked to military sites(pers comm J.D. Hill).
