Object type certainty: Certain

A flat piece of pear-shaped lead. Length 28.5mm, maximum width 19.5mm and 2mm thick. Weight 7.41g. On one side of the lead is an impression made with the obverse die for a Newport, Isle of Wight, copper farthing token. The legend reads: NEW/PORT IN/THE ISLE/OF WIGHT/1664 in five lines, one above the other. Part of a beaded circle can be seen beneath the legend. The other side of the piece of lead is plain. The reverse side of a token with the above legend would bear a sailing ship in full sail. Small patches of lead oxide on both faces.

Notes:

A variety of tokens with this legend were issued by Newport Corporation. The die is for a token that Champion classifies as a Type 96.var. For information on Isle of Wight trade tokens see Champion, A. F. Not dated and privately published.
