A cast lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is biconvex and carinated. Each apex is slightly flattened so that it has a hexagonal cross section. Through the centre there is a sub circular hole that is filled with an iron shank. The iron appears to have trnasveres breaks at each end close to the surface of the lead. The weight is undecorated and covered with pitting and scratch marks. The weight has a cream-grey patination. It measures 16.39mm in height, 23.59mm in diameter and weighs 39.67g.
Lead weights, along with spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the Post Medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty. Decorated examples are thought to date to the Medieval to Post Medieval periods while undecorated examples cannot be securely dated without supporting contextual evidence.
