BELL

Unique ID: NMS-E837B5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Roman copper alloy bell with circular base and very slightly convex sides tapering to a suspension loop in the shape of an inverted triangle. The suspension loop has a circular perforation and the body of the bell has ten triangular openwork apertures, alternately apex-up and apex-down. Iron corrosion inside represents the remains of the crown staple. The bell is slightly squashed. Height 35mm. Diameter 22mm.

Compare examples from Beachamwell (HER 25476), Bradenham (HER 31358), Great Dunham (HER 45401), and bells dated on the PAS website to the Roman period, from Newport, Essex (ESS-954081), Brill, Buckinghamshire (BUC-F532E5), Chippenham, Cambridgeshire (SF-2C7AE4), Barham, Suffolk (SF-4A8FA1), Paulespury, Northamptonshire (NARC-D9C172) and West Clandon, Surrey (SUR-B48E74). This type of bell has recently been briefly considered by Schoenfelder and Richards (2011, 153-4). It appears to be a regional type, being confined to an area south of the Wash-Severn line.
