MOUNT

Unique ID: CORN-DC6646

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete cast copper alloy shield-shaped heraldic mount with large integral central lug. The surface of the mount is corroded, pitted and then worn, so that any decoration is obliterated, but there are a couple of tiny fragments of red enamel following a line that may have originally been part of a chevron, as part of a heraldic device. The edges of the mount have been damaged so that they are ragged now, and the body of the mount has been bent and had pressure applied to it in several directions. The lug is also incomplete, missing its pointed terminal, and is circular in section.

Read (2001) illustrates an example of a shield-shaped mount with central lug, with the Royal Arms of England, and a smaller example with the arms of the Stapleton family, on page 32, Fig.17, Nos.255 & 257, which are dated from c.1300-1350.

Read (1988) illustrates a shield-shaped heraldic mount with the arms of the Courtenays of Devon on page 68, No.369, which dates from around 1335.
