BUCKLE

Unique ID: SF-576950

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper-alloy buckle of Medieval date. It has a D-shaped frame that is oval in section with offset and narrowed bar, and narrowed outer edge that holds in place a sheet copper-alloy roller. A separately cast copper-alloy plate hinges around the frame and is flat, tongue shaped in form with rectangular frame recesses and pin slot, and lower plate that is both shorter and narrower than the upper plate. The upper plate has decoration comprising a single border, with short lines of rocker decoration at the centre of each side. Three central circular rivet holes are present on the upper plate, tow of which retain their separately cast copper-alloy rivets that have flattened heads. A separately cast copper-alloy pin is present at the bar, and is triangular in form, tapering to a sharp point. Traces of gilding are visible on the upper plate and on the frame, both of which have very worn surfaces. The entire object measures 15.36mm in width, 39.44mm in length, 4.16mm in thickness and 4.65g in weight.

This is a copper-alloy buckle of Medieval date. The frame finds parallels in an example published from London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: no. 270) and suggests a date range in the 12th-13th centuries AD for the current example, if not slightly later.
