Silver spoon. Round bowl, possibly gilt within, with a narrow stem broadening to a down-turned spatulate end bearing florid monogram, probably GV. Hallmarks on the back of the stem are: lion walking left [sterling silver], Gothic S in a rounded panel [date], and a king's head right [duty mark]. There is also a stamp reading SA. The letter S denotes the years 1793 or 1813 or 1833 for the London assay office. However, SA might refer to the Sheffield Assay Office opened in 1773, where it was sometimes customary to omit the office stamp, and where the letter may refer to 1778, though this pre-dates the use of the duty stamp. Possibly a salt spoon, with the gilding intended to prevent corrrosion of the bowl. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1778-1833.
