Late Medieval silver soldino of Doge Michele Steno (AD 1400-1413), S MARCVS VENETI (lion of St. Mark).
Diameter: 15.0mm, thickness: 0.5mm, weight: 0.40g
Notes:
The Venetian silver soldino was often known in England as the 'galyhalpens', or Galley-halfpence after the 'Galley-men' who arrived annually with the Venetian trading fleets bringing many of these coins with them. During the 15th and 16th centuries they began to circulate in place of the English halfpenny due to a shortage of this denomination.
